Aurélie has never seen what lies beyond the waves. With her father, she lives on an island she is never allowed to leave, and though she would love to see more of the world, she would never break her promise to him. Until she meets Vana, a mysterious girl who offers her a glimpse beyond the horizon. But when Aurélie returns to her island, her father turns out to be deathly ill.

Elsewhere, Emeric lives in a town plagued by rats. When a mysterious stranger rids the town of the plague and Emeric discovers that not only the rats, but all the children have disappeared, he has only one goal left: to find the children and rescue them at all costs from the Pied Piper's clutches.
