Twelve-year-old Otis is at a new school, with old and new friends. His father, an archaeologist and antiquarian, travels the world in search of unusual books. Their house is also full of such books. One day Otis travels to London with his class. There he meets Anton, an old friend and former colleague of his father.
When Anton and his wife Val invite him to come see their book collection, immediately strange things happen. Otis hears a voice in his head, leading him to a mysterious room. But the voice also warns him. As soon as he sets even one foot in that room, he will never get out.
Otis knows that the books in the room contain the solution to an unsolved mystery in his own family and opens the door....
