Memory Game
The wrong perpetrator has been detained for your father's death. Ever since Emily was told these words, the young detective has been haunted by questions. Why did the man who was jailed confess and who was actually the shooter?
When her roommate Lisa wants to reconnect with her criminal father after more than 20 years, police intern Emily has plenty of reasons to hold back. Yet she fails to contain her curiosity. After all, Lisa's father turns out to be a violent man with a debated past.
After a dramatic event, Emily is plagued by guilt. While her colleagues figure out exactly what happened, Emily resists her senses by delving into an old file about a woman who apparently committed suicide.Â
However, the deeper Emily digs, the more secrets she unravels that relate to her own life. She realizes that her choices also have dire consequences.
Can you still go back after you get to know someone's true nature?
I think it is a promising debut. The characters are well developed and intertwined nicely into one storyline.
In the beginning I sometimes missed some action, but from the moment I knew the background I was completely sucked into the exciting story!Great job!
Nina Verheij's first pageturner. A story that takes a while to get going but then sucks you into the story.
By changing perspective every chapter, she builds the tension quite a bit. It is a story that gets under your skin and also keeps you on your toes until the end. A brilliant debut from a brilliant author. Fatal Choices is definitely a book that will end up in my top 5 this year.
Thriller and love story nicely incorporated into the present and the past.
Emily is a young criminology student who gets to do an internship with the police department. She gets to share the office with the detective who once worked with her father but who died when Emily was only 5 years old. Emily lives in digs with Lisa and Jurre. Jurre is single and Lisa is in a relationship with the musical Lucas who secretly has a crush on Emily. However, Emily also has a boyfriend.
It is a beautiful love story with a top thriller thrown in. This all ends explosively with a very unexpected ending.
The book is set in the past on the one hand and then again in the present.
Nina Verheij's writing style is very accessible and very smooth making it an easy read. I also think this style of writing will attract a very wide audience. Her story is written to perfection and has everything a thriller needs.
Fatal Choices is very strong for a debut. It is well put together, it reads smoothly, in short the book has all the elements needed to be a success. It just makes me curious and excited to read more from this author.

Nina Verheij (b. 1984) is a Dutch author with a weakness for poffertjes and her cat Emmy. She was just born in Amsterdam, but moved to Hillegom in the bulb region as a 6-week-old little toddler with cradle and all.
Her first slightly more serious writing effort as a child was a story about kittens born from a cake. That creative masterpiece remained in her elementary school's library for several years after she gave it to them as a gift when she finished 8th grade.
