The year 1621.

Twelve-year-old Colette Zwart's mother is burned at the stake. Colette swears she will take revenge on the lord of the castle who did this to her, but she does not get that chance. She and her brother Bertus are taken away by the mysterious Maximilian.

He takes them to his castle, far away from their village. There they discover what their mother has hidden from them all these years, and who she really is. To get her mother back, Colette must use dark magic.

But then she finds a long-forgotten garden, containing a mysterious spring that gives access to eternal life.....
