The Abandoned House
Six friends. A locked house. A mysterious chest. What do you do when you are locked in a locked, mysterious house? And what if the chest in the middle of the room, suddenly opens?
If you are in this school, you will never get away from it.
On the day after the Great Storm, there is suddenly a new building in the middle of Kraaidorp. It is called The Dark School, a boarding school for all the children who live in Kraaidorp.
No one wants to listen to 12-year-old Quinten, who is the only one who swears that something strange is going on in his village. Even his father and best friends firmly believe that Bertus and Colette Zwart, the school principals, mean well.
But then, one by one, the children disappear.

A great book for young and old - read with my daughter and enjoyed it as much as she did. A very fun, exciting book that I enjoy looking back on.
I found this to be a very enjoyable juvenile thriller. This is the second book I have had the pleasure of reviewing for Hamley Books and I found this book very strong as well. Sandra J. Paul's writing style is very enjoyable and reads tremendously smoothly. I also really liked the fact that Sandra co-authored this book with her son. It was an exciting book and if I had read this as a child I was guaranteed not to dare go to sleep that night. However, this book also had a downside and that was that I did see some things coming or expected it to go in that particular direction. But even though I saw some things coming I really didn't know until 40 pages from the end how this story would end because it could have gone either way at that point.
This book was a very smoothly written book and highly recommended for children 10+, it is also a very fun book to read with your child or read aloud in a class. I definitely think this book will be liked by many people. I gave this book 4 stars because I thought it was a good book but still saw some things coming. So I am very glad I decided to read this book for this blog tour and look forward to reading more books by Hamley Books (and by Sandra J. Paul of course).
This was really a wow book. It is the story of three friends who, after such a violent storm, suddenly discover a school on an island. Once there, strange things take place and Quinten is the only one who can help and save all his friends. Each chapter ends with a cliffhanger. The beginning of each chapter is very nicely decorated with pen drawings and so you get even more involved in the story. the locations are so well described that you can almost see it before you. This is a book that adults will enjoy reading as well. I can't wait for the sequel. The characters are very well written out
I was given the honor of proofreading this book several months ago. Months later, this gem comes out and I am tripping to read it again...From the first pages, I am once again sucked into a world I love immensely. Darkness, mystery, witchcraft, devils and demons. You sucked me into this nightmare again and I don't regret it. Even though it is for youth, I do not dare to go to sleep this night with peace of mind. Because who knows how I will come back???? Largely, it is creepy, adventurous and enigmatic. Yet the friendship and emotion comes in with sparkles and that did make me emotional at the end. You did that again super well. This genre is just you thing and keep on going that way, is all I can say to this. Sequel to this? Guaranteed and looking forward to this with great anticipation.
I thought it was a fun and exciting story and I can really see why this book is so immensely popular with children, young people and also myself 😉 The toppers are also unanimous and thought it was good but still very exciting at times though.
A book my kids both read with pleasure and some healthy cold sweats from the excitement. A book that I too enjoyed reading and now finally know where the fuzz comes from 😉.

This book is the best children's book I have read in the last 10 years the story is exciting fun and the characters' personalities are well recognized I have one more thing to say about this book A BANGELY GOOD BOOK
When Sandra J. Paul mentioned The Dark School in a Hamley-Livesession on Facebook during the first corona wave, I was immediately curious about the story. Besides, I read reviews that said the book was often quite exciting to be read by 9-year-olds, so it couldn't be boring even for me as a 23-year-old, could it? And indeed, even though I haven't been in the 9 to 14 year old category for a while, I found it a fun and exciting book that I often struggled to close temporarily. The tension is then built up very well and comes to a nice climax at the end. I may have had a slight blue inkling of what the plot might be like at the end, but admittedly, I was still way off. As I got closer to the final plot I fell from one surprise into another, in the positive sense, because this story puts together very well. The ending is indeed partly open-ended, so I can well understand that there was a lot of demand for a sequel. I am therefore very happy that there is now effectively a part 2 and soon also part 3 and will definitely read it.
